Your First Visit

What to Expect in Your First Session

Your first therapy session is a conversation — not a test. Here's everything you should know walking in.

A Warm, Judgment-Free Welcome

Your first session begins with an open, relaxed conversation. There are no wrong answers. You can share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with — your pace is the right pace.

Understanding Your Story

Your provider will ask about your history, current symptoms, and what brings you in today. This helps build the clearest picture of where you are and where you'd like to go.

Setting Your Goals

Together you'll discuss what you hope to achieve from therapy. Goals can be broad ("I want to feel less anxious") or specific — all are valid starting points.

A Clear Path Forward

Before you leave, you'll have a clear plan: a suggested session frequency, an initial therapeutic approach, and the next appointment already scheduled.

FAQ

Common Questions About Supportive Therapy

Everything you need to know before booking your first session.

Supportive therapy focuses primarily on emotional reinforcement, coping skill development, and building resilience — rather than deep exploration of the unconscious (like psychoanalysis) or restructuring thought patterns (like pure CBT). It is highly flexible and often integrates multiple evidence-based approaches tailored specifically to each patient.

Duration varies widely based on your goals and needs. Some patients find significant benefit in 8–12 sessions; others prefer longer-term ongoing support. We regularly review your progress together and adjust the plan — you are always in control of how long therapy continues.

Absolutely. We offer fully equivalent telehealth therapy sessions via our HIPAA-secure video platform for patients located in Virginia, Washington State, and North Dakota. Research shows telehealth therapy produces outcomes comparable to in-person sessions for most conditions.

Yes. Everything shared in your sessions is protected under strict HIPAA privacy regulations. The only exceptions — required by law — involve situations where there is an imminent risk of harm to yourself or others, or in cases of suspected child or elder abuse. These are discussed openly during intake.

No referral is required. You can book a therapy appointment directly through our patient portal or by calling our office. Some insurance plans may require prior authorization — we recommend checking with your insurer before your first session.

We accept Medicaid, Medicare, Anthem BCBS, Aetna, United Healthcare, Cigna, Optima Health, and Tricare. Coverage for mental health therapy has expanded significantly under parity laws. We recommend confirming your specific outpatient mental health benefits with your insurer prior to your first session. Self-pay options are also available.
